What is Fidya

A Muslim may be unable to fast during Ramadan for various reasons, including illness, pregnancy, or travel. In these instances, they must make amends by feeding a needy person for each day of fasting they missed during Ramadan. Fidya is the cost of feeding one needy person each day.

Is there a distinction between Fidya and Kaffara?

Kaffara is only paid if you miss or break a fast without a valid reason for doing so. Fidya, on the other hand, is only paid if you forget or break a fast for a valid reason. For each missed fast, the sum paid in Fidya is enough to feed one person. However, when it comes to Kaffara, each missed fast is worth the equivalent of feeding 60 people.

Is Fidya Mandatory?

All Muslims are required to fast throughout Ramadan, and it is one of Islam’s Five Pillars. When Muslims miss these key components of Islam, whether for a valid reason or not, they must pay Kaffara or Fidya.
